Who has seen the big, colourful murals in the PEC?
When members of the Sport Department, MLC Swimming, and I were looking to refresh the swimming area, we decided that a large student-led mural at the eastern end of the pool would be a fantastic addition.
The mural would be used to display the incredible artistic talent MLC has amongst its student community and provide an opportunity for students to make their mark on the College!
To this end, an art competition was conducted in late 2021 with students from Prep to Year 12 asked to submit work that demonstrated what swimming, water and the pool at MLC meant to them. We encouraged students to use a bold, expressive style for maximum impact.
A bit of background to the space: our current pool opened in 1987 and facilitates swimming, diving, water safety and a range of aquatic based opportunities to both MLC and Non-MLC students. With over 800 visitations per week the aquatic centre plays an important role within our school community.
We received many wonderful entries from students in Junior, Middle and Senior Schools and had a challenging time selecting just three. To come to a decision, we collaborated with the MLC Art and Design Department and MLC Marketing, to select three entries that we felt best captured the sport and what MLC Swimming means to students.
The mural provides not only focal point for the pool but celebrates our student's involvement and use of the pool space.
We welcome you to visit the pool deck when it is safe to do so and see firsthand, these fun and vibrant works.
Well done to all students who submitted an artwork, and to the three winners: (Shown in the image below, L-R) Kate (Year 12) , Phoebe (Year 11) and Celeste (Year 4).
